Fargo Police K9 Unit Helps Nab Suspect in North Fargo Robbery

Fargo Police arrested a man who is accused of robbing a man at gunpoint late last night in North Fargo.

Officers were able to recover the suspect’s weapon with the help of a K9.

Officers have the eyes and ears but K9s have the nose that is the ultimate resource during a search.

Herbert Brown, 36, is currently in custody at the Cass County Jail facing charges of robbery and fleeing.

Police say they were flagged down by his alleged victim just after 11 o’clock last night near 4th Street and 6th Ave North.

“The individual said that he was robbed at gunpoint by an individual who was standing what appeared to be across the street,” said Deputy Chief Joe Anderson of Fargo Police.

Brown was spotted running down the 700 block of 3rd Street, where he was captured and taken into custody.

Police say the robbery appears to have been a random crime.

The victim’s wallet was recovered and there were no injuries.

Police say it was the help of a K9 that recovered the suspect’s weapon, which Brown tossed as he fled.

“The K9 was utilized to try to locate the handgun, which turned out to be a BB gun,” said Anderson.

It was one of these guys right here that helped in last night’s robbery.

Officer Jeremiah Ferris of the Fargo Police K9 unit says it’s the dog’s nose that plays a vital role in the search process.

“The K9’s have a nose that can track people that we might be looking for. They can find people hiding in buildings, and their job is to keep police officers safe,” said Officer Ferris.

He says just like a true law enforcement officer, his partner Bali knows when it’s time to go to work.

“When I’ve got my uniform on it’s that switch that flips. He is a lot more focused,” said Officer Ferris.

Fargo Police currently have three canines on duty.

They assist officers in a number of tasks including drug detection and search efforts.
