Fargo Woman Saves Neighbor from Burning Garage

It’s clear neighbors lining the street of 14th street south look out for one another.

Dispatchers received multiple calls from neighbors this morning, reporting a garage was on fire. But before crews could even get on scene, one woman was already pulling her neighbor to safety.

“First I heard one big loud boom then I heard a second boom that shook the house,” says neighbor, Brenda Dellaneva.

Flames and explosions usually send people running the opposite direction, but not Brenda Dellaneva.

“I’ve just always learned if there is someone in need of help just go,” says Dellaneva.

Brenda immediately ran to the few houses down to her neighbor struggling to escape his burning garage.

“I was on the phone trying to get him in the front trying to get the cops and the firetrucks to the house,” says Dellaneva.

Firefighters extinguished the garage within 20 minutes but the propane tank continued burning for two hours.

“If we wouldn’t have got some cooling operations going on there is a chance that tank could have exploded and we could have had a significantly larger issue dealing with right now,” says Fargo Chief Battalion Chief Bruce Anderson.

“Nearby neighbors were evacuated from their homes and even the Salvation Army was called into help.”

“There was a power line going through the backyard that burned off that went down so somebody is probably going to have some power issues in the neighborhood,” says Anderson.

But regardless of power issues Brenda still remains thankful.

“The cops and the firefighter got here fast enough and I’m really proud of them and they’re doing their job,” says Dellaneva.

Firefighters estimate the total damage cost to the garage is $40,000.

The victim was taken to Sanford hospital and his condition is unknown.

Fargo Fire Department wants to remind the public if there is a fire leave the building by crawling low under the smoke and never go back inside.
