Senator Heitkamp Says FAMILY Act Supports Small Businesses
Senator Heidi Heitkamp pushes to pass a federal bill that will provide paid family and medical leave.
Heitkamp is supporting the FAMILY Act introduced by U.S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.
Both senators focused on how these small businesses would benefit from the act.
Through a small fund of 0.2 percent or about $1.50 per week, employees would be covered.
Heitkamp says this bill would allow businesses to save more cash in the long run due to not having to hire and train as much.
“We talk all the time about how we’re pro-families. But we don’t listen to the stress that families are under. We don’t hear what the challenges are. We don’t respond to those challenges. This is a response to one of the most critical challenges people have which is income insecurity,” says Senator Heitkamp.
Currently, only a third of North Dakota’s working adults are eligible for unpaid leave.
