Symposium Shows Parkinson’s Sufferers They’re not Alone

Doctors and medical experts want to remind people suffering from Parkinson’s Disease that they’re not alone.

Nearly 260 people joined together to learn more about Parkinson’s treatment and how to cope with the disease.

Most treatments involve drugs and rehab, but there is more research being done looking into psychological remedies.

Mental and behavioral health problems can easily hit Parkinson’s patients, and potentially make the disease worse.

“If you have kindred spirits. If you see that you’re not really alone in facing a disease, that just builds strength for you, strength for the caregivers that you’re directly involved with, and in a setting like this everybody’s sort of learning together,” says Michael Manchak with the Midwest Parkinson’s Initiative.

Doctors say that Parkinson’s rates are higher in North Dakota than other Midwest states, and they’re not sure why.
