Out With The Old: Cleanup Week Is Here
Do you have some unwanted items lingering around?
If so, this week you can set them on the curb and the City of Fargo will take it off your hands.
Last year, Fargo’s Solid Waste Department said they collected more than 1,500 tons for Cleanup Week.
It’s an opportunity for people to dispose of old things free of charge.
“I’ve saved so much stuff over the years. I use it periodically over and over but can’t keep it all,” says Ronald Nelson of Fargo.
Nelson is rummaging through his belongings, sorting what he wants to keep and what needs to go.
He says he started cleaning last week and still has a few more boxes to go through.
Nelson adds, “It really is handy as far as getting rid of this.”
Most unwanted items can be left curbside.
Each household is limited to two appliances.
And remember to keep your pile at least five feet away from your garbage bin.
Also, some of the important rules to keep in mind are no electronics, wood, concrete or paint will be accepted.
“The residents are accustomed to this every spring so it’s just a good opportunity for everybody to get their garage cleaned out and get ready for summer,” says Fargo Solid Waste supervisor Jennifer Pickett.
City of Fargo asks to start moving your stuff the day before it collects your garbage, in case it rains.
But with sunshine in the forecast for the week, people are doing their spring cleaning now.
“First of all, it’s beautiful. Second of all, I’m leaving for vacation tomorrow. I’m going to go do some fishing,” says Nelson.
He’s been placing things outside and he says whenever he looks over, something has disappeared.
As the saying goes, what is one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Nelson says, “If they can use it, more power to them. I mean I’m done with it. I got what I wanted out of it.”
Grand Forks and East Grand Forks are holding their Cleanup Week this week as well.
Your unwanted items will be picked up on your scheduled garbage day.

The City of Fargo is also looking for volunteers to help pick up litter around town.
