Fargo Biking Community Grows with New Protected Bike Lanes

People might be more inclined to start pedaling to work.

The city of Fargo is adding even more protected bike lanes.

According to Walkscore, the city of Fargo is the 28th best biking city in the nation.

The city already has miles of on street bikes lanes.

They’ve also introduced the first protected bike lanes in the state and region on west NP avenue.

The city hopes to add to that with new protected bike lanes between Broadway and 10th Street along NP Avenue.

The lanes will be protected by a row of parked cars.

There are two options for the bike lanes, one at street level and the other at sidewalk level.

Bike enthusiasts hope to get even more bicyclists out on the streets.

“And what that does is it kind of buffers the bikes from moving traffic and its proven across the country that more the protected lanes you have on key corridors the more bike riders you get and the fewer accidents you get,” says Fargo City Commissioner, Mike Williams.

“As more and more cyclists are hitting the streets its important that we provide different ways for them to get around town some cyclists will be very comfortable on roads while others are less comfortable in those situations and this gives them just another opportunity to be flowing along with traffic,” says Great Northern Bicycle Company Owner, Tom Smith.

Fargo continues to grow as a biking community.

Last year’s bike share had 142,000 rides with 100 bikes available.

To give you a comparison, Minneapolis’s bike share program had 100,000 rides with 800 bikes available.
