Major is Found: Missing Therapy Dog Returned to Moorhead Woman
A Moorhead woman’s missing therapy dog has been found and returned after two weeks.
Sara Nelson’s dog Major was reportedly taken from her SUV in front of Taxman by 8th Street South in Moorhead.
Police found Major last night at Sara’s ex-boyfriend’s house in Shelly, Minnesota.
But now there’s a dispute as to who technically has ownership of the dog.
When we spoke with Sara Nelson after Major went missing, she told us, “I feel it’s not the time to be emotional. If I go into a negative place right now, I will never come out of it, and I can’t do it. I’ve got to find him.”
And find him she did.
After making a Facebook search group with over 400 people, Sara told police she was concerned Major might be with her ex-boyfriend.
“It took some additional follow-up, I’m not convinced that he was completely willing or cooperative, in fact I would say that he wasn’t cooperative,” Lt. Tory Jacobson of the Moorhead Police Department says.
33-year-old Travis Ryan McKee is currently being held in the Clay County Jail after a domestic assault warrant unrelated to this case.
Moorhead Police returned the dog to Sara until the court decides where Major should go.
“Our decision is based on the fact that she had possession of the dog, and the dog was clearly well cared for, and there was no justifiable reason to change that,” Lt. Jacobson says.
Sara says she couldn’t talk today because she needs some time to cool down, but before, she told us how important Major is to her.
“I’ve always kind of suffered from anxiety, and he’s always been there to help me cope. He’s my listening ear. I talk to him like I would anyone,” Nelson says.
“She does have her dog back, and as far as an argument that her ex-boyfriend may have that it should be his, she has every right to make every argument that she can to court,” Lt. Jacobson says.
On Facebook, Sara says her family is back to being complete, and couldn’t thank the community enough.
