Man Dies After Jumping Off Bridge To Evade Police

A Crookston man is dead after jumping off a bridge in Grand Forks trying to evade police.

Police were investigating a possible assault on the 10 block of south third street around 2:20 a.m. Saturday.

They came into contact with 26-year-old Jose Ibanez, who took off running.

Officers chased him onto the Sorlie Bridge, where he jumped off into the Red River.

Police searched the water for 25 minutes before finding Ibanez along the west bank near the bridge.

He was hospitalized, but later died.

An autopsy is scheduled.

The North Dakota BCI is working with the Grand Forks Police Department on the investigation.
