Caleigh’s Fight: Serving Up Smiles at Historic Moorhead Dairy Queen
It’s National Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen, the day when Blizzard sales go to the Children’s Miracle Network.
This day is more than just a sweet treat for one Sabin girl.
When it comes to this fundraiser, Moorhead’s DQ does it right.
Each year they bring out a kid who has been helped by the foundation.
Meet Caleigh Damm.
At 13 years old, she seems a little young to be getting into the restaurant business but she’s not just here to work.
Caleigh was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 8.
She underwent treatment successfully, but the struggle hasn’t ended.
“I made my Dairy Queen cake here one time. I might do it a second time since I’m in it again…in treatment again,” Caleigh says.
She’s now nearing the end of her treatments.
“I couldn’t be more proud. She is by far the bravest strongest girl I know. Like I don’t know if I could handle everything that she goes through or the other kids I’ve seen with the smiles and the upbeat attitude. Just I don’t know how she does it,” says Caleigh’s mother Kaie Damm.
It’s Caleigh’s first day on the job but she’s already a pro, running the cash register and handing out samples.
“She’s having fun and that’s the whole thing, what the kids go through it’s amazing and that’s what really draws us towards this,” say Troy DeLeon, the owner of the Moorhead Dairy Queen.
DeLeon runs the fundraiser a bit different than other DQs.
Instead of giving a dollar per Blizzard back…he gives it all back.
Every dime spent on Blizzards today goes straight to the Children’s Miracle Network.
At the end of the day one has Caleigh.
“The s’mores one looked good I wanna try a s’mores one, but I made a cookie dough one. I don’t know if I want that one now, I might make a s’mores one,” Caleigh says.
The fund raiser is hoping to raise $25,000.
Last year they raised $20,000 so it’s certainly within reach.
Caleigh really seemed to be having fun out there, and there was a good reason for it.
Her mom told KVRR that they received the results of her last brain scan and the scan shows her cancer free.
