Speeding Costs Minnesota Drivers
More than 13,000 drivers were caught speeding in Minnesota last month.
Three hundred law enforcement agencies across the state took part in extra enforcement from July 8th through the 22nd.
Officers clocked speeds up to 120 miles per hour, and wrote about 1,500 seat belt citations during the two weeks.
Summer is the prime time to track safety on highways because of the amount of people on the roads.
“In the summer months, the roads are dry and people tend to drive faster because they feel that it is safer, but actually, the crashes are more violent so we have more fatal and serious injury crashes,” explained Donna Berger, Director of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety.
The good news?
Officials saw about a 20 percent drop in speeding tickets when compared to the same time last year.
The extra shifts by law enforcement resulted in bumps for other citations, including DWI, and texting while driving.
