UPDATE: Polk County Deputy Recovering After Shooting
A Polk County officer was injured in Clearwater County after the helicopter he was riding in took gunfire.
A Polk county deputy was on board a Customs and Border Patrol helicopter performing a fly by of farmland looking for suspected drug trafficking.
From the ground, shots from a high powered rifle fire shattered one of the windows, injuring the deputy.
At least two rounds were fired at the air craft.
Authorities say it’s common for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Clearwater Sheriff’s office to work with the CBP on such missions.
The helicopter landed at Fosston Municipal Airport after the shooting.
The deputy was taken to a local hospital, treated for his wounds and later released.
Police surrounded a small cabin near the scene of the shooting.
They found Carstie Lee Clausen hiding in the surrounding woods and took him into custody.
Charges against Clausen are still pending as federal, local and state authorities investigate.
We reached out to Clearwater Sheriff’s Office for comment but police are not releasing more information at this time.
The helicopter will be analyzed by crime scene investigators Monday evening or on Tuesday.
This is still a developing case and we’ll keep you up to date on the details as they’re released.
The deputy’s name has not been released.
