Pipeline Protests Carry On
Law enforcement is buckling down after the heated riot last night at the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Law enforcement tells us protesters have moved to the main camp and are currently off the bridge, which was partially destroyed over night by fires.
Along with the fires and Molotov cocktails thrown, officials say four bison and two cows were slaughtered during yesterday’s protests.
Police countered non-lethal beanbags and pepper spray and 142 people were arrested.
At this hour, officers are holding a line north of the bridge to prevent protesters from moving forward.
“Right now we’re still working on clearing Highway 1806 from the protesters and also the private land. They are leaving the scene. Most of them are back at the camp. If they go back to the main camp, there wouldn’t be an issue with that. But they just cannot be on the roadway, cannot be blocking the highway and they cannot be trespassing,” says Morton County Sherriff, Kyle Kierchmeier.
Sherriff Keirchmeier also says a flare gun was fired.
However, no one is in custody and a victim has yet to be identified.
“All we were going to do is go pray. That was the whole purpose of everything today to go pray. And they, they stopped us here,” says a protester.
“We’re going to be out as long as it takes to make sure that this is clear and that the roadway is clear,” says Sherriff Keirchmeier.
In addition, protestors claim authorities have blocked their cellphone coverage in the area.
Authorities are arguing that there is simply limited cell phone service in the region.
