Kids Take a ZOOcation at the Red River Zoo

The Red River Zoo hosted a fun educational event for students on their day off.

Even though kids are off of school today, they’re staying out of the house and enjoying a ZOOcation.

“At the zoo today of course we’re open because school is out, but also we have a special education program called ZOOcation going on, it’s for elementary aged students and it’s a chance for them to come spend the day at the zoo,” said Red River Zoo education director Erica Prokrym.

“Normally we do ZOOcations on days off from school so any special holidays throughout the year that they’re off but their parents may be at work,” said Red River Zoo education program manager Bryan Vasquez.

The annual program has many different activities to keep the kids busy.

“What we do, we do multiple zoo walks, you just watch animals like you do with your family, we also do some experiments, animal presentations, and snack and movies,” Prokrym said.

“They really like doing the experiment, they’re really engaged and they liked designing their own boat and using different methods to see which one works the best so I think that was the most engaging thing,” Vasquez said.

Kids even had a chance to meet a wild animal up close.

“Yeah they have a really fun time, a full day planned, but not too full, we like to keep things mellow since it is a day off of school,” Prokrym said.

“I think this kind of gives the kids a place to go on days off so they’re not just staying at home, they’re able to come to the zoo, learn about the animals, and have a good time,” Vasquez said.

The Red River Zoo’s next event will be Jaws, Paws, set to take place on both December 3rd and December 10th.
