Over 500 deserving families in the F–M area received a Christmas food box thanks to the Salvation Army.
“We’re putting together our Christmas baskets for Christmas and it’s a very busy time down here and we have volunteers down here putting them together,” Said Major Byron Medlock of the Salvation Army.
“Today we started out building boxes, and we’re going to start filling the boxes for the meals,” Volunteer Donna Mallery said.
The boxes include a Christmas dinner including as ham, milk, potatoes, and cake mix.
“It takes the stress off of digging in our refrigerator while other people are having big meals; you have a meal you know,” Said one of the recipients of the boxes, Leroy Clark.
People receiving the boxes have the option to pick it up or get it delivered.
“We deliver and they come here,” Said Medlock. “Some of the people can’t get out or they don’t have vehicles to come down and get it so we have volunteers that are willing to go out there and take it to them.”
Leroy Clark says that he is happy there is a program like this.
“I feel real grateful, money’s tight this winter and I’m just feeling grateful that there is a program out like this,” Clark said.
“Everybody in this community should have a good Christmas, a happy Christmas, and a Merry Christmas,” Said Medlock. “So we want to make sure that we do our part to care of the need for those who are hungry and don’t have the money to buy something as special as this.”
The Salvation Army says that this is a holiday tradition and they hope to do it for years to come.
Most of the food was donated by Hornbacher’s, Cloverdale Food, Land O Lakes, and Pan O’ Gold.
