GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics) – Accolades for UND’s pitcher Kaylin VanDomelen keep rolling in, as the redshirt junior has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s 2017 Division I All-Region Midwest Second Team, the NFCA announced Thursday.
VanDomelen ended the 2017 regular season as the Big Sky Conference leader in earned-run average (1.79), strikeouts (162) and opponent-batting average (.217). Her tremendous season in the circle and at the plate netted her the programs first-ever Big Sky Pitcher of the Year and All-Big Sky First Team honors.
Her total ERA of 1.84 for the 2017 campaign is the lowest ERA in the program’s Division I era and the third-best mark all-time at UND. She also owns the two best marks for most strikeouts in a single season in the team’s DI era, with 166 this season and 151 in 2016.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2017 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
This is the first NFCA Division I award for a UND softball student-athlete. Former softball standout Casie Hanson earned NFCA All-American accolades, but at the Division II level in both 2007 and 2008.
