No Rivalry Brewing Between NDSU and UND Softball
The Bison and Fighting Hawks play a three game series this weekend
FARGO, N.D. — NDSU softball will finish the regular season this weekend in a three game series against North Dakota.
The Bison-Fighting Hawks matchup usually means a big rivalry, no matter the sport, but things aren’t as dramatic between the two softball programs.
This is just the first year UND has played in the Summit league and the teams haven’t squared off since April of 2017. The Bison are 14-1 in conference play, seemingly having the clear edge over the hawks who are just 6-9 against Summit opponents.
“We haven’t played them that often, so I think in the next coming years, it is going to ramp up. But as of right now it is pretty mild compared to in other sports,” senior infielder Julia Luciano said.
“They came and beat us on our own turf when I was a freshman, so I mean you always want to kind of beat the in-state rival,” senior infielder Vanessa Anderson said. “But there is not a huge rivalry just cause they haven’t been in our conference up until this year, but any opponent that comes onto our field you want to beat, so I guess that component of it doesn’t really change.”
