Grand Forks Public Works Uses Vacuum Trucks To Clear Leaves

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVRR) — Grand Forks has a unique way of removing leaves–and then using the leaves for a second purpose.

The grand forks public works has 3 trucks that use a large vacuum on the back to remove leaves.  These vacuums are attached by a trailer to a truck that collects the leaves and moves them from place to place.

Grand Forks Public Works director Sharon Lipsh says, “We only have so many employees to go around and try wrapping everything up for fall and getting ready for winter, so it frees up some crew members to get other things done this time of year”.  The addition of the trucks makes it require less employees to help collect leaves, so the employees can do winter preparations.
The leaves collected are all used to help and protect the environment. Lipsh also said, “And so we use the clay piles at the landfill to do our daily cover and intermediate cover for the landfills themselves. We also haul some leaves to the park district and they compost that and then they use it in their flowerbeds and what not in the spring.”
Residents should place their leaves within 3 feet of the curb, but not in the street. The piles should also be at least three feet away from obstacles.
