‘Like a great, big hug’: 2023 Salvation Army Thanksgiving
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – While many in the metro area are preparing for the holiday tomorrow, there are some that won’t have a home to celebrate Thanksgiving. That’s where the Salvation Army steps in and provide a warm meal for those in need.
This means a lot those in this position, like Dixie Lee Sweney, who has been homeless since 2019.
“You know it’s like a great big hug. I love it. All of the meals are beautiful. This is fantastic and this just makes my Thanksgiving even better.” said Sweney.
They got turkey, mashed potatoes, desserts, and much more. Thanks to the hard work of many volunteers that helped out.
“And here is what I tell them. If it tastes good, it’s because I didn’t cook.” said Abe Tamayo, a major with the Salvation Army.
Jokes aside. It’s really about helping those in need and supporting them.
“The Salvation Army works with those that are disenfranchised, marginalized in our culture and society.” said Tamayo.
Throughout this month, we’ve heard from United Way and other officials on how many people face homelessness in the region. Which is around 1,000 people each night between Cass and Clay Counties.
And having these programs like the Salvation Army means a lot to those that are facing those issues on a daily basis while not being judged for their circumstances.
“It means the world because this is what Jesus always says, come as you are. And these people really do treat us with the utmost respect.” said Sweney.
The Salvation Army say they would be serving around 250 to 400 people on Wednesday.
