Hector International Airport adds Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Air travel can be stressful for anyone, but especially for those that have a hidden disability. But there is a new initiative being implemented at Hector International Airport called the Hidden Disability Sunflower program.

“We’re just pleased to be able to provide this program to the traveling public in our region.” said executive director Shawn Dobberstein.

This supports and raises awareness for those living with a hidden disability. Which ranges from autism to hearing loss.

“Hopefully it will grow across the country so all airports will have it and provide that ease of mind for the traveling public.” said Dobberstein.

Jennifer Steiner, who is an advocate for the program, has Crohn’s disease and says this will help with air travel. Because staff at the airport are trained to be able to help out with these hidden disabilities.

“We’ve been busy here over the last couple of weeks training staff here at the airport,” said Dobberstein. “Whether it’s car rental, airline, our own staff, security and restaurant, gift shop staff to recognize the sunflower lanyards and items that you see here so that they can recognize a customer that may need some additional assistance or time.”

It is signified with a lanyard, a button or a wristband with sunflowers on it.

“They’re here and they recognize that I might have a special need or that I’m able to really move throughout my airport without that concern,” said Steiner. “I travel for work quite a bit and I wear my lanyard and it’s so exciting that we’re progressive and we’re growing and we’re leading this industry. And we’re really bringing programs forward and supporting everybody that’s out there.”

You can find more information on the sunflower program at the information desk at the airport.
