Former Gov. Schafer reacts to Gov. Burgum not seeking re-election

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – It’s official, as Governor Doug Burgum announced Monday that he is not seeking a third term in the upcoming election. Burgum made the announcement after serving for seven years in the position.

“It’s been a true honor. It’s been a profound, rewarding and incredible experience. And because of that it was a very difficult decision for us. Heartfelt decision to not seek a third term. But I am happy to report that the state is incredibly well-positioned.” said Burgum.

Ed Schafer is a former governor for the state. He noted that Burgum’s leadership has been important for North Dakota through the good and bad times. And that Burgum has set the wheels in motion for the next governor of the state.

“I’m pleased because it is important for the Republican party. To me if he’s not going to run, to be able to shape who the next candidates are going to be and the more time we have to do it before our convention coming up in the spring better off the party’s going to be. He opened the door to shape the next governor of the state of North Dakota in a good and timely manner and I appreciate it.” said Schafer.

Burgum was not known on the political field in 2016 when he ran for governor, but his win came to a surprise to many. The North Dakota businessman won re-election in 2020. He said he is proud of the years he’s served in this role, which has seen situations like the DAPL protests, droughts, flooding and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recently while in Iowa, former President Donald Trump said he would have Burgum in his administration if he won the election.

“This guy is the most solid guy. There’s no controversy whatsoever. And he is one of the best governors in our country and I hope I’m going to be able to call on him to be a piece of the administration. A very important piece of the administration.” said Trump.

Burgum said Trump’s remarks didn’t impact his decision to not seek re-election. When it comes to who will be the 34th Governor of North Dakota, that will be decided by voters this year. Burgum was asked if he was endorsing anyone to take his place, this was his response.

“Suspect there will be multiple candidates,” said Burgum. “I’ve heard names that are circulated. I’ve heard names that are speculated, but I haven’t spoken to any of them and I haven’t made any decisions about endorsements at this time.”

Burgum will continue in his role as governor through mid-December.
