Video made by anti-abortion group being used in sex-education classes in Fargo

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – A video provided by an anti-abortion group known as Live Action, is being shown in schools across North Dakota, and it is being used in Fargo Public Schools for sex education. The video is of fetal development called ‘Baby Olivia’.

“We are well aware our video is being played in classrooms in North Dakota,” said Christina Bennett, a news correspondent with Live Action. “And we are very excited about that because we believe that children and young people deserve quality education when it comes to human development.”

Saying in the fall last year, the school district worked with a Human Growth and Development group to follow the 2023 state law when it comes to curriculum.

“Do we want our legislators determining what exactly our children are being taught? I would leave that decision up to the educators and not to that of people at the capital.” said Destini Spaeth, the president of the Prairie Abortion Fund.

Spaeth says it is concerning to see this video being shown to students. Stating that parts of the video talks about weeks of fertilization and heartbeats in the early days of the fetus were inaccurate.

“Children are being shown these medically inaccurate videos that may have a religious angle behind them. It’s really concerning that Live Action, the producers of the film, have been so involved with the anti-abortion movement. The tactics they are using in the video are truly just meant to misinform and miseducate these students.” said Spaeth.

On the other side, Live Action stands behind the production of the video saying medical experts weighed in on the process.

“There is no reason for push back on a simple, animated video of a growing baby in the womb that is reviewed by doctors and medical professionals. And it is scientifically accurate.” said Bennett.

In recent years, the discussion of abortion has become more and more hotly debated after the overturning of Roe V. Wade. As this issue will continue to be on the forefront of people’s minds for years to come. Spaeth wants to see medical professionals come out with a video that can be used in the classrooms.

“I would call on the American Medical Association and [AMERICAN COLLEGE OF OBSTETRICIANS AND GYNECOLOGISTS] to make a video that is scientifically accurate and is something that gives students the tools that they need and the education that they need.”

We asked Fargo Public Schools for an interview, but they declined.
