Moorhead Council Passes Ceasefire Resolution After Mayor Breaks the Tie Vote

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR/KFGO) — Moorhead City Council has approved an Israel/Hamas ceasefire resolution, but it was a close vote.

A number of people attended the council meeting, speaking both in favor and against the resolution.

Several city council members and some members of the audience said they should not be involved in the international conflict.

Council members initially had a tied vote with four voting in support of the resolution, two voting against it, and two others declining to vote.

Mayor Shelly Carlson broke the tie by voting for the ceasefire saying that’s where her heart lies and said she was not speaking for Moorhead, but rather just for the council.

“I will be voting in favor of this resolution but I,” said Carlson as she was interrupted by screams and cheers in the crowd.

She continued, “This is a very emotional night and I specifically stated that I did not want any cheering or clapping.”

“When I filed for city council I never thought I’d be voting on something about foreign policy. And I, I don’t believe that this is really the right place,” said City Council Member Larry Seljevold.

Moorhead is one of several dozen cities that have approved a ceasefire resolution.

Nearly two weeks ago, the city joined Fargo in a joint proclamation calling for peace in Gaza.
