UND Hockey Heads to St. Paul in Search of NCHC Crown

NORTH DAKOTA EYES FIRST NCHC TITLE IN TWIN CITIES; ONLY WIN WAS 2021 AT THE RALPH.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVRR)–It was another successful weekend for North Dakota hockey in Grand Forks as they sweep their win down to St. Paul in the NCHC tournament.

NoDak exploded on offense this weekend outscoring Miami of Ohio 12-2 en route to a two games to none sweep to advance to the Frozen Faceoff this upcoming weekend.

In addition to North Dakota’s stellar play on offense, freshman netminder Hobie Hedquist got the start in net over all-NCHC second team goalie ludvig persson for what was elaborated as “undisclosed reasons.”

Hedquist stepped up to the plate allowing just two goals on the weekend and in total stopping 51 of 53 shots. Hedquist is now 5-0 as UND’s starting goalie this season.

Head coach Brad Berry spoke on the goaltending situation after Saturday’s win.

“I think it provides competition,” said Berry. “[It has been that way] through the beginning of the year, the middle of the year and the end of the year. Everything’s on the table and we have two very good goaltenders. Hobie proved himself now and Ludvig’s proved himself in the past. So, at the end of the day, it’s nice to know guys can come in and contribute.”

Berry continued saying he would not elaborate on the absence of Perrson and stated he will continue to update his status over the course of this week. He continued in the press conference stating the team is looking forward to going down to St. Paul for the Frozen Faceoff.

“We always talked about checking boxes,” said Berry. We won the Penrose, this is another trophy we want to win and you have to win two games. I always say to our guys, in order to win a national championship, you have to win two games on the weekend. We did it this weekend. We got to continue to do that to keep building our body of work to to earn that.”

The Frozen Faceoff is now set.

The seeds 1-3 all advance and an upset in the 4-5 matchup advances Omaha over Colorado college.

UND will take on the Mavericks on Friday, March 22 down in St. Paul at the Xcel Energy Center.

NoDak is 1-3 against Omaha this season winning and falling in overtime at the Ralph in early January, and recently got swept last weekend.
