Concordia College hosts Heitkamp and Schafer Talk about Political Civility

MOORHEAD, Minn.  (KVRR) – North Dakota politicians from across the aisle are joining forces to bring back political civility.

Former Democratic U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Former Republican Governor Ed Schafer held talks at Concordia College about the growing political tensions in the country, and how voters can work to restore civility.

Heitkamp and Schafer led a moderated discussion with members of the community about how people of all political beliefs can work together to advance the common good.

Both feel that their political parties in North Dakota are at least partially responsible for the growing divide.

“We’ve been unable as a party to focus on values. We’re more focused on throwing teachers in jail instead of having good discussions on our ever-increasing budget, which is kind of anti-republican value.” Schafer said.

“What’s great about being here with Governor Schafer is the fact that we can say there was a time, probably before you all were born, but there was a time in American politics where people actually got along and got things done.” Heitkamp said.
