GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND ATHLETICS) – North Dakota forward Hunter Johannes has been signed by the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) to an amateur tryout for the remainder of the 2023-24 season as well as a standard player’s contract for the 2024-25 year, as announced by the club on Wednesday.

Johannes finished his one season at UND with 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points in 31 games. The graduate student was dynamic offensively, potting a trio of goals in the opening weekend against Army and Wisconsin to earn the Ice Breaker Tournament Most Outstanding Player honor before adding four goals over the final stretch to close the first half.

The Eden Prairie, Minn., native opened 2024 with two goals and an assist in a sweep over Alaska before suffering an injury that sidelined him until March. Johannes returned in a big way, however, tallying goals in three straight games to end the season, including opening the scoring in UND’s national tournament contest vs. Michigan.

Johannes will report to Grand Rapids immediately and is expected to make his professional debut this weekend.
