HIGH SCHOOL SBALL: DGF Looks to Repeat as Class 2A Champions
REBELS WON THE SCHOOLS FIRST EVER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP LAST JUNE.
GLYNDON, Minn. (KVRR)–Last summer the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton softball team did something that no other team, in any other sport, in the schools history can say they did- win a state a championship.
This season, the team has their eyes set on doing the only thing tougher than winning a state title, winning another one.
“We are definitely still feeling it,” said freshman pitcher Autumn Leach. “There is a lot of pressure with it. We want to repeat it, but it is going to be very difficult to get there losing our three seniors, especially our catcher last year. She was very important to our team.”
Though the team lost their catcher and a few other seniors, co-head coach Tyler Drechsel says his squad may be young with only a single senior and junior, but the younger players all have immense experience already.
“We lost some key players, but our main core is back,” said Drechsel. “Especially with our pitching and our whole infield. We expect a lot out of the kids. Especially with a lot of them coming back. We are very young still, but they have been starting for two to three years and played in two state tournaments already, so, they are 10th and 9th graders, but we expect them to play like juniors and seniors because they have so much experience under the belts.”
The Rebels are already six games into the season and sitting at a solid 5 and 1 record. The team likes what they are doing on the field and are confident they can replicate the success they had last season
“I think we are all hard workers,” said senior first baseman Lola Garrett. “We all have the same goal and we are all very together, so I think just being close is going to help us.”
Leach added on, “I think we are doing very good, but our lineup is definitely changing. It has already changed a lot so far and it has only been two weeks, so I think there a lot of changes that are still going to be made, but I think we will be good.”
