Moorhead family seeking change in Minnesota laws after drowning tragedy

MOORHEAD, Minn.  (KVRR) – A family in Moorhead have been grieving since the death of their 13-year-old daughter, and they are using that pain to ask for changes in Minnesota law by marching at the capitol this week.

The Rich family are asking for laws regarding water safety, like life vests being required for minors under the age of 18 while out on the lakes. They are also wanting to add negligence to accidental deaths, after their daughter, Abcdee, died while at Lake Julia, Bemidji, in July last summer.

The Rich family are doing this in honor of their daughter’s legacy.

“Bring awareness to help the situation and at least one family, one other child.” said Anthony Rich, Abcdee’s dad.

“We’re obligated as parents to fight for other children. We’re obligated to protect them from going through what we’re going through.” said Michealine Rich, Abcdee’s mom.

The march is set for Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in St. Paul.
