FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (KVRR) – Voters overwhelmingly reject a nearly $55 million bond referendum for Fergus Falls Public Schools.

The school district says 1,341 voted in favor of the proposal, with 2,262 voting against it.

The referendum would have paid for a new school for students in grades 3 through 5.

Schools like Adams Elementary and McKinley Elementary would have been closed and sold.

Superintendent Jeff Drake said that the limited space in both schools, which are 85 years old, has limited the ability to provide important learning services to their students.

The proposed 102,000 square foot facility would have provided easier access to learning opportunities at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center.

After the results came out, Drake said, “Although the proposal was not approved this time, we will continue to work diligently to ensure that our students receive a high-quality education in safe and nurturing environments.”

According to the district, the average homeowner in Fergus Falls would have seen a tax increase of $100 per year.
