FARGO, N.D. (KVRR/FOX) — Senate Democrats plan to force a vote Thursday on new border legislation.

The bipartisan Border Security Package negotiated by Republican and Democratic senators is aimed at reducing border crossings, making it tougher for migrants to qualify for asylum and quickly turn away those who fail to meet it.

It was defeated once before after former President Donald Trump voices his opposition to the bill.

“I do not understand how our colleagues, particularly on the Judiciary Committee, on which I serve, can go to the floor day after day and talk about drugs or talk about the border and not being willing to actually do something about it,” said Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement will hold a field hearing next Wednesday in Grand Forks.

The issue under discussion: the effects of the current border crisis on North Dakota’s residents and communities.

The hearing will be held in a ballroom at Alerus Center at 9 a.m.

It will be attended by North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley, the sheriffs from Cass and Renville counties, along with the Wahalla Area Chamber of Commerce executive director.

The field hearing will be live streamed here.
