20-year-old arrested in Wahpeton after assaulting and pointing a gun towards family member

WAHPETON, ND (KFGO/KVRR) – A man was arrested after a shelter in place was issued for part of Wahpeton Friday afternoon. Police Chief Matthew Anderson says officers responded to a report that a man had assaulted a family member at a home on 3rd St. N. and pointed a gun at them.

A perimeter was established. Anderson says the family was able to leave the home and were taken to safety. The suspect was 20-year-old Nathan Deemer.

Anderson says the Southern Valley Special Response Team was activated. After about three hours, Deemer left the house through the rear entrance and tried to get away. Officers deployed less than lethal sponge rounds and Deemer surrendered. He was taken to the Richland County Jail on outstanding warrants and for terrorizing and domestic assault.

Wahpeton Police were assisted by the Richland and Wilkin County Sheriff’s Departments, Breckenridge and North Dakota State School of Science Police, End of the Woods Task Force and North Dakota Highway Patrol.
