Cass County Sheriff’s Office warns of new scam impersonating deputies

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is alerting people to a new scam tactic involving scammers pretending to be from the Sheriff’s Office.

The scammer called a Cass County resident and said he was a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office. When the victim questioned the scammer, they were placed on the phone with another man, who invited the victim to come to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Center if they wanted verification.

The scammers were able to convince the victim to send them almost $5,000 through a Bitcoin machine.

Sheriff Jesse Jahner says that these types of scams rely on public information about the Sheriff’s Office, and wanted to remind people that his office will never ask for a payment to be deposited.

“The Sheriff’s Office is not going to ask people to drop money at locations, or take money over the phone. So if you receive a call in that fashion, I’m asking and I’m urging our public to hang up the phone.”

He added that due to many of these scammers being from outside the U.S. it can be almost impossible for victims to recover the money they’ve lost.
