Pink Ribbon Scramble Helps Women battling breast cancer
MAPLETON, N.D. (KVRR) – The Pink Ribbon Scramble at the Maple River Golf Course in Mapleton, North Dakota was founded in 2006 as a way to help women battling breast cancer and other illnesses.
Over the years the scramble has benefited many different area nonprofits.
However, in 2022 organizers decided to focus on financially assisting area women battling breast cancer and other illnesses in partnership with Lend a Hand Up.
“Three years ago we started giving money to Lend a Hand Up. They started a gift card program for us, because our fundraiser is always about breast cancer, and we wanted to help the ladies.”
Peinovich said that the impact that the money raised from this event can have for women battling illnesses is so important.
“This fundraiser adds even more support to those families. Especially the females in our Cass, Clay and Becker communities. When they get that extra gift card that they can use wherever the need is greatest. It’s just a true sense of collaboration. It is neighbors helping neighbors, and what a beautiful day we have here today to help our neighbors who are going through a tough time.”
Kim Wonch spoke to those participating before they hit the course. She is a cancer survivor and mother of four who was helped by Lend a Hand Up during her treatment.
She described her treatment as one of the hardest times of her life.
“20 rounds of chemo. A double mastectomy with reconstruction. All 15 of my lymph nodes removed. And 25 rounds of radiation.”
However she says the help that she received from Lend a Hand Up provided her with security and made sure she could focus on her healing.
“The support that I was given by this group gave me peace of mind that all I needed to do was concentrate on my healing and being there for my family.”
Wonch said she’s been cancer free since March, and she believes that the help she received played a huge role in her recovery.
“My mental state was able to focus on what it needed to and not the burden of bills. So thank you to them and thank you to all of you for helping people like me and so many others.”
