Metro COG continues to survey for expansion of Heartland Trail in Northern Minnesota

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — Metro COG is continuously working on a study to expand the Heartland Trail from Northern Minnesota into the Clay County area.

Heartland Trail currently extends 49 miles from Park Rapids to Cass Lake.

With the proposed expansion it will be an additional 30 miles.

The project was approved in 2006 to start the study of the expansion of the trail into the Moorhead area.

However, It wasn’t until 2014 that discussions began with Clay County authorities, stakeholders, and the public.

Metro COG has outlined three potential pathways that community members can vote on.

“What would you prefer as a rider or as a user, what would be your best preference? And so we hope to ideally plan the trail in a way that the public wants to see and maybe not just what is the most cheap or practical,” said Dan Farnsworth, METRO COG Transportation Planner.
