Video of stabbing suspect raises questions about vulnerable adults

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – “Dude, this is the guy that’s on the sign. That’s the rapist right there.”

These are the types of videos that populate the YouTube channel believed to belong to Michael Hurteau, the man charged with attempted murder after a stabbing in Downtown Fargo Sunday afternoon.

“Cancerous, predatory people. Constantly targeting and hunting someone.”

In the videos Hurteau talks about being sexually assaulted by a group of shadowy individuals who he says are placed around him as part of a conspiracy.

“People are intentionally planted in orbit of me with some type of a job. They cooperate with each other, they’re instructed with their phones to do certain things at certain times in orbit of me and within a certain proximity.”

Several of the videos show Hurteau confronting individuals he says are following him. In them, he appears to be in the Downtown Fargo Library.

“What is love? Love is stalking someone to the library?”

And these confrontations are not the first time they’ve happened, according to the library director.

Hurteau was there confronting patrons at the library shortly before Sunday’s post-Pride Parade Stabbing.

“We did have a brief incident with him with other patrons, they just had a discussion, quarrel situation, but nothing that escalated.”

Confrontations like these are a daily occurrence the library, Dirks says, and with other people besides Hurteau who appear to be in mental distress.

“A lot of things that happen out amongst the homeless population, the mentally ill population, can transpire here on site, and that is a challenge. I think we do the best with the resources we have.”

He says that this has placed a lot of stress on those working in the library, who are tasked with deescalating these incidents.

“I worry that as the situation in and around downtown has its challenges, that those challenges will manifest themselves at the ma”

And Dirks says this is a problem that can only be solved by a community wide effort.

“It really takes the community to look at that, and look for solutions.”
