MSUM Soccer prepares for upcoming season under new coaching staff
MOORHEAD (KVRR) – The Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons are gearing up for a season full of changes. They have a new head coach, a bunch of new players and new expectations heading into the 2024 campaign.
“Excited to find success this year. We think our new players and new coaching staff will be able to find us a lot of success this year. And we’re super excited to get out there and play our game.” said Blayke Hurley, a junior forward.
Scott Forster inherits a team that went 2-7-5 in conference play last year, and the offense failed to score a goal in the final three games. But, that was last year, and this new coaching staff is ready to recreate a new culture on and off the field.
“Big dragons are made from small eggs, that’s where we are right now,” said Head Coach Scott Forster. “There’s a lot of great jigsaw puzzles that we can see right now with the good pieces. We haven’t put them together yet. The next few weeks are going to help us. We’ve got some scrimmages coming up.”
Most of their offensive production is no longer with the Dragons, leaving players like Blayke Hurley to step up and lead the program. The returning members on this roster are stoked to see what all these new changes bring to Moorhead.
“Half the team is brand new. They’ve never played college soccer in their lives. So it’s fun. As an upperclassmen, to be able to teach them the way, the dragon way, as we like to say. It’s fun to teach them how we play our game and how we act as a dragon.” said Hurley.
And the same goes for the defensive side of the ball with Quinn Carter starting in goal after only playing in two games last year. As the returners continue to learn from this new coaching staff and vice versa.
“They’ve been super welcoming and willing to hear our ideas and what we’ve done in the past and implement their ideas and our ideas to kind of make a new culture here together.” said Quinn Carter, a junior goalkeeper.
The Dragons kick-off their season with an exhibition game against the Jamestown Jimmies on August 24 on the road.
