Former Lt. Governor Marlene Johnson optimistic about growth of women in government

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – Back in 1983, Marlene Johnson made history as the first woman to become Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota.

“Well it was an exciting opportunity. Governor Perpich was committed to changing the way government looked. He wanted to expand the opportunities for women, so the timing was perfect for me, and it was a very exciting time in Minnesota politics I think.”

Now she’s sharing the story of her journey in politics in a new memoir, “Rise to the Challenge.” In it, she describes the work that she did alongside Governor Rudy Perpich to ensure that she was respected in the office.

“He assigned me to chair the Open Appointments Commission, to ensure that his appointments to boards and commissions reflected the diversity of Minnesota. Both in terms of women and men, as well as people of color.”

And now, 41 years after she took office, this election season has historic implications, both nationally and in Minnesota. If Vice President Kamala Harris emerges victorious she will take Minnesota Governor Tim Walz with her, becoming the first woman to hold the office, and making Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan the state’s first female governor.

“Lieutenant Governor Flanagan and Vice President Harris are both very well prepared, and I think this is the moment in time. It’s a very exciting moment.”

While she says that there is still work to do in increasing the representation of women in our government, Johnson says that she is always optimistic that they will get their chance.

“Even though there are still periodic bumps along the way, I think it’s encouraging that we continue to nurture women leaders.”

“I have a lot of optimism about society and how we’re changing, and I think it’s all for the good.”
