Fire Prevention Week Focused on Working Smoke Alarms
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — It’s Fire Prevention Week and this year’s campaign is “Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!”
Fire officials want to educate people on the importance of ensuring your smoke alarm is working.
Smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by 54 percent, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
Installing smoke alarms in every bedroom and testing them at least once a month is recommended.
“We want everyone to go and test their smoke alarm. Make sure they have a working alarm in place because having one and having one not work is not going to do you good so you want to have them in your bedrooms in your hallways and on every level of your home including your basement,” said Fire Marshal Ryan Erickson.
You should also replace your fire alarms every 10 years or sooner if they’re not functioning properly.
