MOORHEAD, MINN. (KVRR) – American Crystal Sugar Company is being fined after failing a pollution control test.

The company’s Moorhead sugar beet processing facility failed emissions performance stack tests on two boilers in Fall of 2023.

The tests showed that permitted limits for filterable particles and particulate matter were exceeded by as much as 226 percent.

The Minnesota Pollution Control received reports from the company confirming that this was caused due to using too much fuel.

In addition to paying the $12,315 civil penalty, American Crystal Sugar completed a series of corrective actions, including retesting and submitting a plan to ensure they will operate within permitted limits.
