What to know before you head to the polls in North Dakota

Voting

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – With just over a fortnight before election day, voters across the state of North Dakota are preparing to cast their votes.

North Dakota is the only state in the country where voters do not have to register before they cast their vote in elections. However there are still some rules that voters should be aware of before they make their way to the polls.

Whether you’re voting early, or you’re waiting until election day, if you plan to vote in person you’ll need a valid ID whether that’s a driver’s license, a tribal-government-issued ID, or a long-term care certificate from a North Dakota Facility.

As long as your ID has your name, date of birth and current residential address, you’ll be ready to vote. If you don’t have a valid ID you can still fill out a ballot, which will be kept secure until you provide your identification to the proper election official so your ballot can be presented to the canvassing board for inclusion in the tally.

If you want to skip the lines on election day, there are a couple of options to cast your vote early.

In Burleigh, Cass, Grand Forks, Morton, Stark, Stutsman and Ward counties, there is the option for early voting. Early voting begins in Morton County on October 23rd, Burleigh County on October 24th, Stutsman and Ward Counties on the 28th, and Cass, Grand Forks and Stark Counties on the 29th.

If you need an absentee ballot, there is still time to request one. You can fill out the request form on the North Dakota Secretary of State’s website to receive your absentee ballot. Absentee ballots must be dropped off in person, or postmarked before election day.

That is also where you can find information on where to vote and see election results.
