Students work to register marrow donors for NMDP

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Students from around the community are working to get people registered to donate bone marrow.

NMDP, formerly the National Marrow Donor Program and Be The Match, is looking to collect 300 samples for their registry to donate.

One NDSU student helping with the program has already given a life saving donation, and now she’s working to help other people do the same.

She says that being able to help someone battle cancer with a donation is an experience unlike any other.

“It’s still currently anonymous, but I’ve gotten letters through anonymous emails, and reading those have just kind of given me the opportunity to give someone else the hope that they’ve given me, reading that from their perspective, that you truly can save someone’s life.”

Thirty percent of blood cancer patients have a donor in their family, but the other 70% rely on the registry to find donors.

You can find a link to sign up to the registry here.
