Youth Ice Fishing Derby on South Woodhaven Pond
Event organizers estimated over 200 children participated in the competition.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Last January, ice fishing was hardly a consideration. But this year, the temperatures were perfect for a family-friendly competition.
Fargo Parks and Fargo-Moorhead Walleyes Unlimited teamed up to host the annual Youth Ice Fishing Derby at South Woodhaven Pond.
The free event was open to kids 15 and younger, and all you had to do was bring your rod and tackle.
Walleyes Unlimited made sure plenty of holes were drilled in advance.
Event organizers said that seeing how ice fishing is such a bonding activity for families is what makes the entire occasion so special.
“The memories that they have – because they’ll continue to share that, over and over, for years to come,” said Tatiana Friese, event supervisor for Fargo Parks.
“That’s what makes me so happy about doing my job.”
Prizes were given for categories such as most fish caught and total length of fish.
Plus, there were fire pits where you could roast S’mores if you needed a break from the action.
