Hearings Begin On Bill To Protect Renters Rights In North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) — If you’re a renter in North Dakota, a new bill about moving in and moving out might be changing.

The Industry, Labor and Business committee heard testimony about the bill offered up by West Fargo Representative Jared Hendrix.

The motion for a bill to be introduced was made by a Bismarck native who had garnered support through a Facebook group called ‘Legislative Action For Renters North Dakota.’

She claims that a large rental company charged her $5,000 in fraudulent charges when she moved out.

She couldn’t pay and it was sent to collections which she says ruined her credit.

The bill would change North Dakota Century Code relating to inspections done for renters.

“But the issue is that if you’re going to require per contract somebody be responsible for something and you don’t have any sort of consultation with that person, I think that’s a problem and that’s what this bill tries to fix,” said Hendrix.

The hearing for the motion will proceed in the coming days.
