FARGO (KFGO) – Security changes are likely coming to Fargo City Hall after a person attended Tuesday night’s commission meeting carrying a knife.

Commissioner Dave Piepkorn says there have been discussions about tighter security at City Hall in the past, but this incident will likely speed up the process.

“What that did is, that precipitated that we need to take some immediate measures, and also – eventually – secure the entire City Hall,” Piepkorn says. “It’s not just for the city commissioners. It’s for the members of the public that come to the meetings and for city staff. It was very alarming.”

Piepkorn says some security measures may take time due to policy and budgeting, but there are things that can be done immediately.

“The immediate actions will be – for the city commission meetings – you can’t allow bags and all those kinds of things but, with government entities, you have to follow policy,” Piepkorn says. “Clearly, when you have somebody with a knife at a city commission meeting, we need to take action now.”

Piepkorn says commissioners met Wednesday about security.
