Shanley girls’ basketball growing thanks to some 7th grade magic

FARGO (KVRR) – In a sport dominated by seniors and juniors, one 7th grader is making a name for herself in high school girls’ basketball. Meet Jaya Taylor who is turning heads in North Dakota.

“I was just really ready. I prepared over the summer. I’m in the gym every single day. So I prepared and I was ready.” said Taylor.

Taylor isn’t your typical 7th grader. While most of her peers are just starting to find their own ways in middle school, Taylor made her decision long ago and put her mind to making it to the varsity level for Shanley.

“I just made it a goal to play varsity as a 7th grader then keep going up to reach my goals.” said Taylor.

The coaching staff for the Deacons saw Taylor at a camp last summer. Quickly they knew Taylor was special. The young guard started for the JV roster which allowed her to grow. Shanley took off the training wheels are they are seeing the benefits flourish on the court for Taylor and this program.

“Started all of her minutes on the JV level. And once we saw her really dominate at the JV level, she continued to work very hard and earn her spot for varsity. Which is what we’re starting to reap the benefits of here at the end of the season.” said Head Coach Beth Maher.

Not everyday a 7th grader walks into a program and plays a huge role. According to her coaches and many others, Taylor has a dedication to the sport rarely seen in middle schoolers.

“What impresses me about Jaya is her work ethic. And her grit. And her will to want to win. She has that look in her eyes that she wants the ball and let’s figure out what we can do here to score and win this basketball game.” said Maher.

This guard has all the tool you want in a player. She can shoot, she can handle the ball, she can defend and do it all for a young Shanley squad. While Taylor has a lot of skills, she loves a certain part of her game more than the others.

“Defense, it’s definitely defense just bringing all that energy on defense. And on offense, just working my hardest.” said Taylor.
