LendingTree Survey Data Reveals North Dakota As Top State Vulnerable To Retaliatory Tariffs

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — A new LendingTree survey puts North Dakota and South Dakota in the top 10 of states that would be most vulnerable to President Trump’s tariffs.
The analysis finds North Dakota would rank at number one as the most vulnerable to “retaliatory” tariffs and South Dakota third.
The data comes from trades made in 2023 with nearly ninety percent of exports with Canada, Mexico and China.
North Dakota ranks at number six for the states that would be most affected by Trump’s tariffs with nearly eighty percent of imports from the three countries.
South Dakota ranks 10th.
“It just creates real challenges for companies and there’s no question that there’s a lot of difficult conversations going on in corporate boardrooms in North Dakota and all across the country trying to figure out what best to do,” said Matt Schulz, Chief Credit Analyst at Lending Tree.
A majority of Americans believe tariffs will lead to higher prices and negatively impact personal finances.
