Senate discusses resolution to change term limits for state officials and legislators

State Capitol Bismarck Tasha 2022 Scaled

BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR)  — In 2022, voters approved an amendment to the state constitution limiting the governor to two four-year terms and enacting other term limits.

Now a new resolution in the legislature looks to repeal some sections of the state constitution relating to term limits for members of the legislature, governor, and other positions.

Term limits for attorney general, insurance commissioner and secretary of state would be expanded from two to three terms.

State senators and representatives could also serve three terms.

Legislators currently can only serve eight years in the legislature.

“The key point is this,” said Sen. Justin Gerhardt (R-Mandan). “We’re not taking anything away from the voters. We’re simply presenting them with another choice. If they prefer this alternative, they can adopt it. If not, the current term limits remain in place. That’s democracy in action.”

This resolution is one of several other bills and resolutions that aim to expand term limits.
