Push for Elimination of All Car Window Tint Regulations in North Dakota

Jeremy Schaeffer was inspired to create a petition after he was repeatedly penalized for his tint.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Some folks never even consider the level of tint on their car windows – but for one North Dakota resident, it’s a very personal issue.

Jeremy Schaeffer is extremely sensitive to light and also has astigmatism. It can cause severe vision issues when he drives.

So he tinted up his Toyota Camry – and the tickets began rolling in.

“The last one that I got, that happened in October,” he explained.

“I got a letter from the DOT that said my registration would be suspended if I didn’t take it off.”

He caved and got his car back to legal – but he decided to try and do something to change the laws. That led to him creating a petition under the title No Tint Law ND.

Governor Kelly Armstrong did just lower restrictions on side window tint, but this bill would completely erase tint regulations. That’s something Tom Marx down at Window Tint Pros is all for.

“People would be able to make their own decisions and not be so restricted,” he said. “There’s a lot of different scenarios where you want darker window film for certain things, but it’s not legal right now.”

He’s got a copy of the petition at his shop, collecting signatures, and says his customers are also enthusiastic.

Jeremy says he’s seen a lot of backing already, and he’s excited to get this issue on the state ballot. In order to do so, he needs 15,000 signatures by February of 2026.
