UPDATE: Two Fargo men arrested during I-29 traffic stop for having explosive device

THOMPSON, N.D. (KVRR) (UPDATE 8:30 PM)  Two Fargo men were arrested after an explosive device was found in their vehicle during a traffic stop for tinted windows.

It happened on I-29 near Thompson around 8:40 a.m.

North Dakota Highway Patrol says Gabriel Messmer was driving and arrested for possessing an explosive device.

His passenger, Christopher Ringsrud-Knowles, was also charged with possessing an explosive device.

Grand Forks Bomb Squad detonated the device around 12:10 p.m.

I-29 reopened around 1 p.m.

 

THOMPSON, N.D. (KVRR/KFGO) — North Dakota Highway Patrol says I-29 near Thompson was closed for several hours because of potential explosives found during a traffic stop.

Lieutenant Ryan Panasuk says a trooper stopped a vehicle around 8:45 a.m.

During a search of the vehicle, troopers saw what they believed were explosives.

I-29 was closed for safety and Grand Forks Bomb Squad was called.

In the noon hour, the device was safely detonated on site.

Highway Patrol says the vehicle was thoroughly cleared using x-ray screening and searched.

The investigation is ongoing.

I-29 reopened around 1 p.m.
