Overcrowding may force euthanization at local animal rescue and pounds
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — The City of Fargo currently has five area shelters and rescues to take care of animals. But this week, a concern for local rescue 4 Luv of Dog Rescue is having to euthanize for space.
“We have been overcrowded for a long time, but it’s really hitting the crisis point in our area. Our pounds have not had to euthanize dogs for space alone in over twenty years, and unfortunately, we might have to break that record this week,” said Amy Gore, 4 Luv of Dog Rescue Foster Coordinator.
4 Luv of Dog Rescue has been in the Fargo area for twenty years rescuing and rehoming dogs. In 2024, 6,600 dogs were placed into their forever homes, but the numbers of dogs coming in continue to rise.
“Our shelter is completely full. We also have a significant amount of dogs in paid boarding that we are paying for out of the rescue funds. Just to be able to save their lives because we have no space,” said Gore.
Currently, the Fargo Pound has three dogs that are in need of a home, with one being as young as nine months old. The rescue has been doing their best to take in as many dogs as they can and find new homes.
“We work hard at fundraising, so if you are at all available this summer to foster a dog, we even need babysitters. So if you can even do short-term or weekends, we need all the help that we can get,” said Gore.
