Fargo Hosts 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Organizers say the event gets bigger and better every year.
Fargo Juneteenth

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Juneteenth was officially celebrated on Thursday, but the city of Fargo kept the party going on Saturday afternoon.

That’s when they held their 6th annual Juneteenth celebration in Broadway Square.

It was similar to the earlier festivities in Moorhead, with vendors, inflatables, and food trucks.

This was bigger in scope, though, as staff estimate a thousand people came out to celebrate.

Event organizers say it took a long time to get to this point and they’re proud of the progress they’ve made.

“North Dakota – in 2017, they didn’t have Juneteenth. It wasn’t a federal holiday and it sure wasn’t a state holiday,” explained Fred Edwards. “So we advocated, we went to the city council meetings and things like that. [Now], it’s a national holiday, people get the day off, it’s really huge. It’s amazing to see people cultivate and come together.”

Edwards also said that they coordinated efforts between the cities of Fargo and Moorhead, and both cities said they wanted to have separate celebrations on separate days.
